Need a coffee IV throughout your work days? Struggling to lose weight? Stuck with circular thinking? Have crappy digestion? Having several of those probably means your adrenals need some major love.

Using Citrus Oils to Support Your Adrenal Glands

Our adrenal glands sit on top of our kidneys.

They produce adrenaline when our brain senses danger. Those glands fire, and cortisol and adrenaline are pumped through our body, enabling us to launch into the appropriate action.

The 3 responses our brain has when that adrenaline and cortisol are flowing are:

  • Fight,

  • Flight, or…

  • Freeze.

Any of these 3 responses are designed to help us, in certain dire situations. For instance, if you need to swiftly grab and use that fireplace poker against a masked intruder, or if you need to pump the brakes in your car before it skids into a stray mattress on the highway…your adrenals firing will help you accomplish just that.

Why Having Constantly Firing Adrenals Hurts our Health

Despite the helpfulness of being on high-alert in those situations, remaining “under the influence” of adrenaline is problematic for day-to-day life.

Why? Well - being in “fight/flight/freeze” mode tanks our focus on daily tasks, depletes our energy levels, and can make it impossible to sleep deeply (or to fall asleep at all)!

In addition, our body shuts down our other functions to focus on surviving that threat! This means your metabolism shuts down, your logical thinking shuts down, your blood sugar skyrockets, your melatonin (sleep-hormone) production is dampened, and your body has a hard time lowering any inflammation. YIKES!

So… what’s the solution?

Help your body and brain discern between what is a real threat, and what is not.

  • Masked intruder = Threat. Probably a very good time to fire that adrenaline. (So what if you’re forgetting what is on your grocery list, or if you don’t digest that meal, or can’t fall asleep… you’re literally in survival mode til that intruder is gone!)

But…

  • Not being able to find my keys?

  • Estimating there is over 3 exits-worth of a traffic jam ahead?

  • Ruminating over what my in-laws will say about me if I don’t do X thing at the reunion?

  • Weighing, re-weighing, and re-re-weighing the likelihood that the coworker who was whispering in the corner and then glancing my way is on a mission to get me fired?

=NOT real threats. And a totally unhelpful time to fire that adrenaline. (Say bye-bye to weight loss, clear thinking, focus, sleep, and peace while I fight or flee from those pseudo-attackers in the world of my mind!)

Fight-Flight or Freeze are not my friends here. Whether I get pumped up, anxious, or fearful in those times will NOT help me win in those situations.

To the contrary - my logical thinking goes to pot, my digestion shuts down, I lose sleep and my inflammation goes up.

Basically - it’s anti-survival. It’s self-sabotage of the highest degree!

We’ve got to help our body and brain know what is a real threat, and what is not. This might seem easier said than done, but I’ve had IMMENSE relief of many emotional blocks and stress-patterns by using essential oils. I use them in these 2 ways:

1. Apply emotional-blend oils intentionally for stress relief and to help process the situation objectively.

2. Drink and diffuse citrus oils to lower cortisol and blunt its effects on your body.

Applying Emotional-Blend Oils for Stress Relief and Processing

All emotional oils are helpful for this.

I pick one that applies to my situation/thoughts, and apply it topically and huff it multiple times a day, saying an affirmation or Scripture each time.
